What is the PCAOB?
The PCAOB is a private-sector, non-profit corporation, created by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, to oversee the auditors of public companies in order to protect the interests of investors and further the public interest in the preparation of informative, fair, and independent audit reports.

What's New
PCAOB releases Auditing Standard No. 3 – Audit Documentation - June 9, 2004. This standard was approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission on August 25, 2004, and is effective for audits of financial statements with respect to fiscal years ending on or after November 15, 2004. For other engagements conducted pursuant to the standards of the PCAOB, including reviews of interim financial information, this standard takes effect beginning with the first quarter ending after the first financial statement audit covered by this standard.

Washington , DC , June 18, 2004 - The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board announced that its Auditing Standard No. 2, “An Audit of Internal Control over Financial Reporting Performed in Conjunction with an Audit of Financial Statements,” has been approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The PCAOB expects to publish staff guidance regarding implementation of the standard.

[Editor's note: Auditing Standard No. 2 is sometimes refered to as "The March 9 document." It's VERY important for Compliance Teams to understand this standard, since it will shape how your auditors will assess Section 404 compliance. To help you, SOX-online has provided the standard and also excerpted key passages, available in its new Auditing Standard No. 2 section.]

Washington, DC, June 10, 2004 – The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board announced today that it has scheduled the first meeting of its Standing Advisory Group for June 21 and 22 to review existing auditing standards and to discuss potential future standards.

Live and archived webcasts are available from this site. They weigh in on standards and ask for feedback. Section 102 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 prohibits accounting firms that are not registered with the Board from preparing or issuing audit reports on U.S. public companies and from participating in such audits. The PCAOB Registration Page gives a list of registered accounting firms, forms, examples, FAQs, other registration documentation, and a link to online registration.

Caveat Emptor
At first glance, www.pcaob-online.com appears to be an official site. It's actually a vendor site from a group offering compliance services.
